Lahul and SpitiLahaul and Spiti, the largest district in Himachal Pradesh, is a vast area of high mountains and narrow valleys bounded by Ladakh to the north, Tibet to the east, Kinnaur to the south-east and the Kullu Valley to the south. Lahaul is often regarded as a midway point enroute to Leh and Indus valley, but has more to offer travelers. Spiti has only recently been opened to foreign tourists attracted to its isolated Buddhist gompas and villages. Most people in Spiti are Buddhists, and colourful gompas dominate the villages and village life. In Lahaul, about half of the population is Buddhists, while the other half is Hindu. In some Lahauli Temples and homes, it is not unusual to see idols from both religions side by side. Due to the paucity of agricultural land, polyandry has traditionally been common, though this has changed recently. Farms, which are usually inherited by the eldest son, rely. The main indigenous language of the area is Bhoti, which is very similar to Tibetan; there are several distinct, but mutually comprehensible, dialects. History In the 10th Century, upper Lahaul was united with Spiti and Zanskar as part of the vast Guge kingdom of western Tibet. After Ladakh’s defeat by the Mongol-Tibetan armies in the 18th century,Lahaul was split into two regions.Upper Lahaul came under the influence of Kullu Raja, while Lower Lahaul, across to the district of Pangi, came under the influence of the courts of Chamba. The more geographically isolated Spiti remained part of Ladakh. In 1847, Kullu and Lahaul came under British administration as a division of the Kangra state; Spiti was added two years later. In reality power rested with the Nonos, hereditary rulers of Spiti. With The Chinese occupation of Tibet in 1947, the region’s cultural links were severed. The exile of the Dalai Lama has, ironically, seen resurgence in the cultural and religious life of Spiti. At the same time, improved communications have seen a rapid integration with the rest of India and a tentative entry into the modern world. Best time to visit: The best time to visit Lahaul is mid-June to late October, and Spiti is August to October. |
